Learning to read is an essential life skill for all students. Helping a child with a reading disability can be complex, especially if other learning disabilities are present. Traditional reading methods don’t work for a lot of kids, especially if they have Dyslexia or Autism. New developments in vision and reading science now makes it possible for children to learn reading in whole new way.
Dr. David Bloch, an eye doctor and dyslexia expert, in Carlsbad, CA was granted a patent in 2024 for his method of correcting Dyslexia and other reading disabilities. His Reading Without Limits program teaches poor and inexperienced readers to recognize words without emphasizing phonics, sight reading, picture books, or verbal cues. Most dyslexic children using Dr. Bloch’s program are able to catch up or exceed grade level reading in about 3 months.
The prevalence of reading problems in children with Autism is quite high. Studies show 33% to 65% of them have some form of reading difficulty. The reason for their difficulty varies widely due to deficits in visual, auditory, and cognitive processing skills. Even so, Dr. Bloch says that children with autism should not be underestimated when assessing their ability to read. Children with autism have a wide variety of intellectual strengths and weaknesses, generating the term Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The key to reading success for these kids is finding which factors are holding them back and building a treatment program that uses their strengths.
In the simplest form, reading success can be categorized into three main problem areas. First the reader needs to identify the words they see (say the word). Second, the reader needs to know the meaning of the words they say (read), which is heavily based upon understanding spoken language (oral comprehension). Third, the reader needs to quickly understand a series of words strung together (in the right order) as sentences and paragraphs. Dr. Bloch’s Reading Without Limits program determines which areas are hindering reading ability and then targets each component with a series of drills that develop or reprogram those skills.
In general, students with Dyslexia have a greater problem with word recognition and less problems with reading comprehension. Students with Autism have more problems with reading comprehension and less problems with word recognition. But all students with reading disabilities have visual processing and visual tracking problems, which can lead to slower reading speed, reading errors, attention issues, and mental confusion. Statistics also show that students with Autism and Dyslexia have higher incidence of vision and hearing problems. Therefore, it is essential for these groups to have comprehensive vision and hearing evaluations.
Parents that have a child with a reading disability, whether it be from Autism, Dyslexia, or some other learning disability, should not wait to get extra help. The best plan includes early intervention and having the right tools. Some schools have special reading programs that might help their child, but most of those programs still use the same phonetic based reading programs that are used to teach students without reading disabilities. Qualifying for a special education program might mean extra attention, more time to complete assignments, and smaller incremental lessons, but it doesn’t necessarily mean re-entry into mainstream classroom right away.
Dr. Bloch’s Reading Without Limits program has been extremely successful at helping students jump to the head of the class in record time. His patented process teaches word recognition with out any complicated or “hard to remember rules” that are commonly used in phonetic based reading methods. It’s also pushes visual tracking and visual processing skills several grades past expected norms allowing kids to catch up to their peers. More importantly, reading comprehension improves for everyone, some more than others. Results tend to vary depending on initial vocabulary level and compliance with the program, but gains in reading performance are significant.
