The Coast News Group

Ownership and editorial independence

chriskydd
The Coast News is an independently owned and locally operated news organization serving North County San Diego. The Coast News Group is owned and operated by Coast News Inc., a privately held California corporation taxed as an S corporation.

Jim Kydd, who founded The Coast News in 1987, is the sole owner of Coast News Inc. The company has no outside investors, parent company, private equity ownership or special-interest ownership. No political organization, lobbying firm, political action committee, government entity or other outside party holds an ownership interest in the company or exercises control over its journalism.

The Coast News remains locally operated by the Kydd family. Jim Kydd’s son, Chris Kydd, serves as publisher and oversees the company’s day-to-day operations.

Editorial independence

Editorial decisions are made independently by newsroom leadership based on accuracy, newsworthiness and the public interest. Advertisers, sponsors, donors, business partners and other outside interests do not determine, approve or control our news coverage.

The Coast News maintains a separation between its independent journalism and its commercial operations. Advertising, sponsored content and paid partnerships are clearly identified so readers can distinguish them from independently reported news.

Our local ownership allows The Coast News to remain focused on the communities we serve rather than the interests of a national media chain, investment firm or outside shareholders. Our editorial decisions are guided by the public interest, journalistic ethics and our responsibility to North County San Diego.

We will update this disclosure if there is a material change in the ownership or control of Coast News Inc.
