Train fatally strikes pedestrian in Encinitas

ENCINITAS — A passenger train fatally struck a pedestrian today near Moonlight Beach, authorities reported.

The Coaster train hit the person near the intersection of Encinitas Boulevard and North Coast Highway 101 shortly before 8:30 a.m., according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

The victim, whose identity was not immediately available, was pronounced dead a short time later at a hospital, Lt. Mike Davis said.

This most recent death marks the region’s 11th train fatality this year and one of several in Encinitas. On Jan. 13, a southbound BNSF freight train struck Cade Joseph Wood, 18, of Encinitas, killing him near the intersection of Vulcan Avenue and D Street in Encinitas. The following month, a woman was struck and killed by a southbound Coaster train on Feb. 10 near the intersection of Chesterfield Drive and San Elijo Avenue.
