San Dieguito Academy High School’s robotics team, Team Paradox 2102, took home second place at the SoCal Showdown Off-Season Competition in El Segundo this month. Team Paradox was the only team from San Diego County to compete and finished with a record of 8-7 before earning a spot in the finals.
ARTS CENTER
The City of Escondido has officially issued a certificate of occupancy to John Paul the Great Catholic University for its St. Juan Diego Performing Arts Center, the school’s new creative arts complex in downtown Escondido. The first class was held on Oct. 22, which is also St. John Paul II’s Feast Day. The school is preparing to furnish and equip the building in time to use most of the complex by January.
DEPLOYED DOG
Oceanside-based Shelter to Soldier’s morale dog, Raider, has officially deployed aboard the USS Makin Island as an officially designated FIDO (fleet integrated dog operator). During deployment, he will support more than 2,500 sailors and Marines.

YOUNG FILMMAKERS
Pacific Ridge School seniors Zaky Lozuk and Miles Labovitch co-wrote the film, “Nice to Meat You,” which took home five awards at the 2026 San Diego 48 Hour Film Project, including third best picture, best film second runner up, best actor with Thomas Van Briggle, best editing for Chasen Dinh and Simon Lim, best production design from Jonathan Lopez, and Best Use of Single Genre, out of 57 films.
CALIFORNIA CONDORS
The San Diego Zoo Safari Park sent its 200th California condor to be released in the wild in Yurok Country along the California-Oregon border. With this release, 200 of the California condors hatched at the Safari Park have now been released into the wild, bringing the total number to 291.
