Vista man arrested in fatal AM/PM incident

VISTA — Sheriff’s homicide detectives have arrested a suspect in the death of a man found bleeding outside an AM/PM store last week.

Detectives arrested Jonathan William Badillo, 18, of Vista, on Oct. 2 in the 3800 block of Helix Street in Spring Valley. He was booked into the downtown jail.

Badillo is being held without bail and is scheduled to be arraigned on a first-degree murder charge at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Vista Courthouse.

At about 3:15 a.m. Sept. 30, someone called the AM/PM store in the 1400 block of East Vista Way to report a “subject in front of the (convenience store) door, bleeding,” according to Lt. Joe Barry of the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies performed CPR on the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, Barry said. Authorities did not initially release details about how he died, “other than he was covered in blood,” Barry added.

The sheriff’s office said detectives were interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence to determine the circumstances and motive. Based on the initial information, authorities said the death appeared to be an isolated incident.

Detectives have not yet released the victim’s name as they continue working to confirm his identity and notify his family.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s Homicide Unit at 858-285-6330 or, after hours at 858-868-3200, or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
