Two arrested in connection with teen’s homicide in Carlsbad

CARLSBAD — Police arrested two teenagers after responding to a shooting on July 23 near the 2300 block of Caringa Way in Carlsbad, police said on July 24.

According to a release from the Carlsbad Police Department, officers received a call at 7:26 p.m. for an injured individual. Upon arriving, police and paramedics found an 18-year-old male lying in the complex’s courtyard suffering from a gunshot wound, according to the release.

He was transported to a local hospital and was pronounced dead.

Officers were able to identify several persons associated with the incident in the immediate area, the release said. Detectives from the Crimes of Violence Unit responded and continued the investigation, which led them to two suspects.

Police arrested a 16-year-old girl and 19-year-old Gerardo Gonzales of San Marcos.

The girl is charged with manslaughter and gross negligent discharge of a firearm, while Gonzales is charged with felony child endangerment. Both were booked into the Vista Detention Facility.

The identity of the victim will be released by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office. The investigation is ongoing.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting were not immediately released.
