Shooting in O’side may be gang related

OCEANSIDE — A 20-year-old man was shot allegedly by a 16-year-old male in an apparent gang-related incident on the 400 block of Grant Street in Oceanside at about 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 1, according to the Oceanside Police Department.

Responding to calls about a shooting, police found the victim lying unresponsive in the courtyard area of an apartment complex, according to an Oceanside Police Department press release.

The victim, a documented gang member and Oceanside resident, was taken to a trauma center and is expected to survive his injuries.

The victim was visiting his aunt in the complex when he allegedly approached a group of males near the entrance of the complex.

Witnesses heard gunshots and saw the victim run into the complex and collapse.

Although witnesses reported multiple gunshots, the victim was shot once, said Lt. Leonard Mata.

When police arrived, they saw a group of juveniles running from the scene.

One 16-year-old Oceanside resident, who is known to police as a gang affiliate, was detained.

The male was subsequently arrested for attempted murder and participation in a criminal street gang.

The suspect is in custody in Juvenile Hall.

The motive for the shooting has not been determined and the investigation is ongoing.

No additional suspects have been located at this time, said Mata.
