ENCINITAS — On Aug.4, at about 7:55 a.m., patrol deputies from the Encinitas Sheriff’s Station responded to a hit and run traffic collision, with injuries, on N. Rancho Santa Fe Road.
When they arrived, their investigation led them to the following information: a white Nissan pickup truck had been driving south on N. Rancho Santa Fe Road, at a speed unsafe for the traffic conditions.
A car preparing to turn east on Calle Santa Catalina had stopped for oncoming northbound traffic. The Nissan swerved to the right to avoid a rear end collision with the stopped car and struck a 57-year-old female bicyclist.
The victim was riding southbound on N. Rancho Santa Fe Road with her husband and both of them were in the bicycle lane. The suspect vehicle drove up on the curb after hitting the bicyclist and then drove away southbound on N. Rancho Santa Fe Road. The victim’s husband followed the suspect vehicle on his bicycle and was able to obtain the truck’s license plate number.
The suspect’s vehicle was last seen driving eastbound into Rancho Santa Fe.
The victim was transported to Scripps La Jolla Hospital’s Trauma Unit. The force of the collision caused her to suffer serious injuries; she remains in the hospital recovering. Deputy Brenda Sipley from the Encinitas Station Traffic Unit took over the investigation from patrol deputies.
A check of the suspect vehicle’s license information led Sipley to the registered owner’s address in Fallbrook. Through her investigation, she was able to identify 26-year-old Alejandro Uriostegui as the suspect in this case. At about 7 p.m. on Aug. 4, Uriostegui was arrested for felony hit and run.
He was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on $50,000 bail.
