Cristiane Gilligan of Carlsbad was among 800 students to graduate from the State University of New York (SUNY) Delhi last school year. Gilligan earned a bachelor’s degree in culinary arts management.

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Oceanside resident Colleen Kollar Smith is the incoming artistic director at the Lamb’s Players Theatre in San Diego. She has a long history with the theater, having served as a choreographer, director, actor and creative collaborator there. She is also the recipient of multiple San Diego Theatre Critics Circle Craig Noel Awards.
MEMORIAL GOLF
The Army and Navy Academy Alumni Association has formed a memorial golf tournament to honor John Maffucci, a beloved coach who spent nearly 60 years at the school and served as athletic director for more than 40 years. Carlsbad has designated Oct. 28 as John Maffucci Day as well. The golf tournament will be held at Twin Oaks Golf Course in San Marcos on Nov. 6.
WOMAN’S CLUB
The Bonsall Unified School District Board of Trustees and the Bonsall Education Foundation recently honored the Bonsall Woman’s Club on Sept. 10 for the group’s community service and role in preserving the historic Bonsall Schoolhouse.
STEM CELL THERAPY
Local Carlsbad-based SMSbiotech received an FDA “Study May Proceed” notification for its Phase 1b trial of an inhaled stem cell therapy for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which is delivered directly to the lungs through a standard nebulizer rather than by injection or invasive procedure. The therapy is designed to stimulate the lung’s own regenerative machinery, with preclinical studies showing structural and functional lung recovery.
