VISTA — Three people were arrested during a DUI checkpoint in Vista over the weekend.
The checkpoint ran from 8 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday in the 700 block of East Vista Way, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
Out of 306 cars that passed through the checkpoint, at least 15 drivers were referred for a secondary evaluation, officials reported.
Twelve drivers were cited for allegedly driving without a license and three vehicles were impounded.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, at least 1,038 people were killed in the country due to alcohol-related crashes in December 2023.
“Don’t drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. We also want to remind the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement. “Some prescription medications and over-
the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.”
Authorities advised the public to celebrate the holiday season responsibly by not driving under the influence and encouraged people to stay in for the night or plan ahead by designating a sober driver, using public transit or calling a taxi or rideshare service for those who intend to drink.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the NHTSA.
