Man arrested in connection with fatal hit-and-run in Vista

VISTA — San Diego County Sheriff’s Office personnel have arrested a man in connection with a suspected hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian in Vista on Monday.

Around 11:30 p.m. on Monday, law enforcement responded to a call for service in the 300 block of Sycamore Avenue and found an injured man lying on the sidewalk with visible injuries to his face.

While he was conscious when paramedics arrived, he later died at the hospital from his injuries, which medical staff said included severe head and facial trauma, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s Homicide Unit took over the investigation due to the suspicious circumstances of the accident. Two days after the accident, on Wednesday, law enforcement arrested 37-year-old Paul Anthony Fletcher Jr. on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run resulting in death.

Fletcher was booked into the San Diego Central Jail and was scheduled for arraignment on Friday afternoon.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office will confirm the decedent’s name and cause of death. The motivation and circumstances surrounding the collision are still under investigation.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit at (858) 285‑6330. Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling Crime Stoppers at (888) 580‑8477.
