Public spaces in Carlsbad should feel safe and welcoming for everyone, especially families and children.
Following the reported assault of a Sage Creek High School student by a transient individual, many residents are again raising concerns about safety and loitering around the Georgina Cole Library, Hosp Grove Park and nearby public spaces.
As a Carlsbad parent, I appreciate the library’s role as an important community resource. However, many residents feel conditions inside and around the facility have noticeably changed in recent years. Families should feel comfortable using these spaces without concerns about safety or inappropriate behavior.
City staff have stated they are committed to maintaining a welcoming environment while enforcing rules of conduct. That effort is appreciated, but many residents believe stronger enforcement, increased security presence and additional resources are needed.
Possible solutions could include increased security presence, stronger enforcement of existing conduct policies, reasonable time limits for non-academic facility use, and expanded city-operated resource centers separate from family-centered civic spaces.
This is not about lacking compassion for those experiencing homelessness. It is about ensuring public spaces remain safe, clean and functional for everyone who uses them.
Cities across California are grappling with these challenges, and Carlsbad should continue working toward solutions that balance compassion with public safety and accountability.
