Fallbrook drug raid yields psilocybin mushrooms, guns

REGION — A Fallbrook man was taken into custody on Monday after authorities uncovered more than 200 pounds of illegal “magic mushrooms” stored in his home, law enforcement officials said.

Randall Scott Vance, 41, was arrested around 9 a.m. on Oct. 4 by the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department following a search warrant executed as part of a drug investigation.

Deputies searched a business on the 200 block of West Ash Street in Fallbrook and a residence on the 1600 block of West Lilac Road in Bonsall. Two children, ages 10 and 12, were present at the home during the raid and were taken into custody by their mother.

Detectives from the sheriff’s Marijuana Enforcement Team and Crime Suppression Team at the Fallbrook Sheriff’s Substation were involved in the operation, which revealed an illicit manufacturing and distribution network for psilocybin, the psychoactive compound in “magic mushrooms.”

“Psilocybin is the psychoactive ingredient in magic mushrooms or shrooms and is listed as a Schedule 1 drug under the Controlled Substances Act. It means psilocybin has a high potential for abuse, and there is currently no accepted medical use in the United States. Possession and sales violate state and federal laws,” the sheriff’s department said.

Authorities said they seized 250 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms, 40 pounds of psilocybin-infused chocolate, ecstasy, LSD, ketamine and six firearms from the two locations.

Vance was arrested on multiple drug-related charges, including committing drug offenses while armed and child endangerment.

Vance remains in custody as the investigation continues.
