CARLSBAD — The city of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Department hosted some rip roaring fun at its third annual Wild West Fest.
Nearly 1,500 guests parked themselves at the Leo Carillo Ranch Historic Park for an afternoon of good times and picture perfect shots.
Keeping the event fresh and new, this year encompassed a Native American theme. Prior events highlighted cowboys and Mexican American pastimes.
But one thing that hadn’t changed at the ranch was the welcome of peacocks showcasing their colorful feathers for everyone to admire.
“Carlsbad is rich with history and the idea of this event is to give a glimpse of the different historic cultures of Carlsbad,” said Rachael Shay, recreation supervisor at the city of Carlsbad. “Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park is the perfect venue and backdrop for this event with its historical look and feel.”
The event has grown more popular with each passing year. Shay said the reasoning behind this may have to do with how Carlsbad, being the beach community it is, allows its residents to experience fun with other cultural themes that they are not regularly exposed to in their everyday lives.
It also gives families the opportunity to learn things about Carlsbad that they never had the chance to know.
“Wild West Fest is an event with a nice hometown feel that really gives families a sense of community, while exposing them to various cultures once found in coastal Southern California,” she said.
Keeping in mind that the event was free and family-oriented, the city worked hard to include action-packed activities that would be of interest to people of all ages.
The Wild West Fest activities agenda consisted of interactive demonstrations such as archery, grinding acorns with a mortar and pestle, basket weaving, Native American dancing, drumming and storytelling.
The Native American dancers and drummers attracted a crowd during the performances of their war dance, hoop dance, eagle dance and women’s traditional dance. Guests expressed that they were impressed by how expressive the routines were.
Also on hand were traditional themed Native American crafts, an inviting trading post where people could purchase some fantastic “must haves,” and pony rides for the kiddos.
Shay said she was certain that the teepee would be a huge draw for family photos.
Shay relayed a generous thank you to Chili’s of Encinitas, which sponsored its salsa contest.
“They will be judging the competition and will also provide our winners with prizes that include gift cards to Chili’s Restaurant,” she said. “They will also be sampling their namesake, chili.”
Shay went on to thank the city of Carlsbad Parks and Recreation Department along with the San Luis Rey Mission Indian Foundation who made the day a success.
Throughout the day, guests strolled along the pristine trails. Some had the energy for a 4-mile walk, while others just puttered around taking in the sights.
Although Wild West Fest has come to a close, Shay said the city encourages people to visit the trails, which are opened to walkers, bicycles and dogs on leashes. “Maps for the trail are available at the visitor center at Leo Carrillo Ranch,” she said.
