Tourney raises funds for girls volleyball club

CARLSBAD — As people passed by Carlsbad State Beach, Halloween costume-clad girls playing volleyball caught their attention. The Oct. 30 scene was actually the first Youth Wahine Halloween Classic.
The fun two-on-two beach volleyball tournament attracted 13 double teams ages 14 to 18.
The event raised roughly $500.
Noel Frohman, founder and chief executive officer of Wahine Beach Volleyball Club, said the event proceeds were going toward an account to help pay for travel expenses for future national tournaments.
“We go to nationals each year,” Frohman said. “In July, we went to the 2011 USA Volleyball Nationals in Chicago and took 14 girls with us.”
And every penny counts when it’s national tournament time.
In addition to Halloween beach volleyball, the day was also filled with prizes for costumes and tournament winners.
“We are hoping to grow this event so it can be a really fun, healthy way for kids to enjoy Halloween,” she said.
Frohman, a respected competitive volleyball player, opened the doors to Wahine Beach Volleyball Club for girls 7 to 18 years old in 2010. In essence, their club is at the beach.
“The cool thing about our club is it’s not just about volleyball,” she said. Frohman stresses that the club experience is unique in the fact that it promotes a healthy lifestyle, instills positive interaction with others in the sport, teaches goal setting and life skills, and paves the way for girls to be leaders in their community.
The club has grown so popular, Frohman said, that in 2012 they are starting up classes two months earlier in January. In addition to training and practicing, the girls participate in weekend tournaments.
Although majority of the players come from Carlsbad, some players reside in Rancho Bernardo, Del Mar, and Oceanside.
“The club is opened to anyone,” said Frohman, adding that it is getting bigger.
Sponsor for the Youth Wahine Halloween Classic was Doctor T’s Supergoop Sunscreen.
