Teen struck, severely injured by car in San Marcos

SAN MARCOS — A teenager in San Marcos sustained severe injuries after being struck by a car on Thursday morning at an intersection near San Marcos High School, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department confirmed.

Around 6:35 a.m., a car was traveling northbound on South Rancho Santa Fe Road near the intersection with San Marcos Boulevard when it struck a 16-year-old girl crossing the road.

San Marcos Fire Department officials quickly arrived at the scene and provided medical aid before transporting the girl to the hospital with severe injuries.

The San Marcos Unified School District released a statement to district families regarding the incident.

“I am heartbroken to share with you that this incident involved one of our San Marcos High School students. Unfortunately, the student was struck by a car and sustained serious injuries, and their family has granted permission to share that she is not expected to survive,” said Superintendent Dr. Andy Johnsen.

The district also said crisis and counseling teams are available to support San Marcos Unified families and students, as well as no-cost Care Solace services to connect families, students and staff to mental health and counseling supports.

The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with Sheriff’s Traffic Investigators, according to the department. Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be factors in the collision.

Traffic in the area was delayed for several hours due to police activity at the scene.

Mayor Rebecca Jones called for the community to come together after the tragedy.

“Today, our community experienced a heartbreaking and tragic traffic collision. Our heart goes out to the SMUSD student’s family, friends, and everyone affected by this devastating incident. We are all deeply saddened, and we know many of you are feeling the weight of this tragic situation,” Jones said. “Let us come together as a community to support one another and the family impacted by this tragedy. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.”

Anyone who may witnessed the collision or captured the incident on a dashcam is urged to contact Sheriff’s Deputy James Clone at (760) 510-5047 or via email at [email protected].
