Sheriff investigating fires at Surfer’s Point

ENCINITAS — The San Diego County Sheriff’s Bomb/Arson Unit is investigating the cause of a fire that broke out Sunday morning at Surfer’s Point, a spokesperson confirmed.

Arson investigators were not immediately available for comment at this time.

A video posted on Sept. 29 on the Instagram account @encinitaskeepinitreal depicted black smoke and flames billowing from a section of Surfer’s Point near Batiquitos Lagoon.

The area, surrounded by tractors and construction equipment, is undergoing land renovations as part of a city-led effort to create a park and viewpoint on the site.

Firefighters with the Encinitas and Carlsbad fire departments responded to the scene to help extinguish the blaze. Two other fires were reported that day in the same location.

The Coast News will update this story as more information becomes available.

CORRECTION: The original version incorrectly said the fires were on Monday. The fires occurred on Sunday.
