Sharp Carlsbad Surgery Center recently performed a County first: robotic-assisted procedure in an outpatient surgery facility. The advanced robotic excision of endometriosis using the da Vinci Xi surgical system was a milestone not only for Sharp HealthCare, San Diego’s largest and most comprehensive health care delivery system, but also for women’s health services countywide.
“I’m excited to be able to offer this option to my patients,” says Dr. Chandra Spring-Robinson, who performed the procedure and specializes in the treatment of endometriosis, a painful condition in which tissue grows outside the uterus.
“I’ve had the privilege of helping more than 1,500 women through robotic minimally invasive surgery, many of whom were living with complex endometriosis.”
Dr. Spring-Robinson shares that she is guided by a singular surgical philosophy: no endometriosis left behind. It reflects her commitment to the meticulous excision of disease and individualized care for every woman — even outside of the hospital setting.
“Sharp’s ability to offer advanced robotic surgery across its hospitals and now Sharp Carlsbad Surgery Center allows us to individualize not only the procedure, but also the care environment,” she says. “Every woman deserves the highest quality surgical care in the setting that’s best for her.”
According to Scott Evans, Sharp HealthCare’s executive vice president of hospital operations and chief strategy officer, Sharp has a longstanding legacy of advancing robotic surgery. Sharp, he says, was the first provider in San Diego to perform robotic surgery, and Sharp Memorial was one of the first hospitals in the world to feature the new da Vinci 5 platform when it debuted in 2024.
“Sharp is committed to being the region’s leader in adopting robotic-assisted technology because it can provide better outcomes for our patients,” Evans says. “These procedures require smaller incisions, so they typically result in less blood loss, lower risk of infection, less pain and quicker recovery.”
Sharp currently provides robotic-assisted surgery at Sharp Memorial Hospital, Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns, Sharp Grossmont Hospital, Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center, Sharp Coronado Hospital and Sharp Tri-City Medical Center. Evans emphasizes that the health system is excited to now bring the technology to one of its outpatient surgery centers and looks forward to expanding these options in the near future.
