San Marcos officials make ghost gun arrest

SAN MARCOS — Law enforcement seized an illegal, unregistered firearm from an individual in San Marcos on Saturday and arrested him for several firearm-related charges.

The suspect, 25-year-old Victor Lopez, got out of his car and fled from deputies after they attempted to pull him over just before 9:30 p.m. on Saturday on West Mission Road near Comet Circle, according to the San Marcos Sheriff’s Station.

Deputies caught up to him, detained him, and found a loaded privately manufactured weapon, also known as a ghost gun, on his person.

Ghost guns do not have serial numbers or other identifiable markings, unlike weapons made by licensed manufacturers. This makes them difficult to track back to their owner or maker, especially during criminal investigations.

Lopez was arrested on suspicion of multiple weapons-related charges, including possession of a weapon with a prior felony conviction, and booked into Vista Detention Facility, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.
