OCEANSIDE — Thousands gathered along Coast Highway in Oceanside to watch the Oceanside Independence Day Parade, held each year on the Saturday before the Fourth of July.
According to MainStreet Oceanside, the parade’s organizer, the parade has been a “beloved tradition” since 1892 – four years after the city was founded on July 3, 1888 – and serves as “a tribute to our community’s spirit, our hometown heroes, and our country’s heritage.”
This year is particularly special for the parade because it also celebrates the United States’ semiquincentennial, which marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
MainStreet Oceanside also honors Oceanside’s “hometown heroes,” who are chosen by residents based on their contributions to the community.
This year, Oceanside Pop Warner was crowned the parade’s grand marshal. Thomas Eberhardt was named the military hometown hero, Robert Parker the volunteer hero, and James “Skip” Pahl the community champion.

Several local elected officials also appeared in the parade, including Mayor Esther Sanchez, Deputy Mayor Eric Joyce, Councilmember Rick Robinson, Councilmember Jimmy Figueroa, City Clerk Zeb Navarro, City Treasurer Phyllis Dominguez, Supervisor Jim Desmond and Assemblymember Laurie Davies.
The parade’s lineup featured a variety of different local organizations, schools, agencies and cultural groups that reflect the community’s diversity.
No parade would be complete without marching bands, and the Oceanside Independence Day Parade had plenty. Both Oceanside and El Camino high school marching bands appeared with their color guards, along with the Navy Band Southwest and the 1st Marine Division Band.
KOCT, Oceanside’s public access television station, broadcasts the parade and interviews notable participants, including elected leaders and the annual hometown heroes.
Following the parade, the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce held an Oceanside USA 250 Festival, a free public event featuring a country music festival, a kids’ grand prix, a fun zone and more at the Junior Seau Pier Amphitheater.
