CAMP PENDLETON — A Marine Corps recruit assigned to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego died Wednesday, days after suffering a medical emergency during a routine physical fitness evaluation at Camp Pendleton, military officials announced Thursday.
The recruit was pronounced dead at Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside after the medical emergency occurred Saturday, according to Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego.
The recruit’s identity is being withheld until at least 24 hours after next of kin have been notified.
The circumstances surrounding the death remain under investigation, and officials are conducting a standard medical review.
The Marine Corps said it is providing support to the recruit’s family and requested privacy. No additional details were released.
The incident marks the second recent death involving a Camp Pendleton Marine. In July, Lance Cpl. Armando Ortiz Canseco, 21, was declared dead after disappearing during training off the Southern California coast. His death remains under investigation.
