Man hospitalized after spinal cord injury at beach

ENCINITAS — A third person in the past 24 hours has been hospitalized following an incident at Moonlight State Beach.

A man was taken by ambulance to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla shortly after noon Friday after suffering a spinal cord injury when he hit his head on a sandbar while diving into the surf.

The man, who was described as a young African American male, was in stable condition, said Encinitas Marine Safety Capt. Larry Giles.

The incident comes less than a day after lifeguards pulled two unconscious swimmers from the waters of the north end of the beach.

The two swimmers, described as Hispanic males, one of whom was a juvenile, were caught in a rip current around 2:20 p.m. Thursday.

Giles said the two men remain in critical condition in the intensive care unit in Scripps Encinitas.
