Man arrested after suspected DUI crash onto Carlsbad train tracks

CARLSBAD — A 25-year-old Oceanside man was arrested on suspicion of DUI after a vehicle crashed through a fence and onto railroad tracks early Dec. 21, authorities said.

At approximately 2 a.m., Carlsbad police responded to an automatic crash alert near Washington Street and Beech Avenue and found a blue Hyundai Elantra on the train tracks, according to CPD spokesperson Denise Ramirez.

A passenger inside the vehicle was injured and taken to a nearby hospital. No other injuries were reported.

The driver, identified as Jose Antonio Torres Vazquez, allegedly fled the scene but was later located nearby with injuries consistent with the crash and signs of intoxication, police said. Investigators determined his blood alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit.

Train service was briefly stopped while officers and fire crews secured the scene.

Vazquez was booked into the Vista Detention Facility.
