Last week, a fourth-quarter sprint came up just short. This time, there was no drama.
Rancho Buena Vista trailed Fullerton by 21 points entering the final quarter last week before eventually falling 34-28. This week, the Longhorns didn’t need a late comeback, answering Friday with a 38-12 road win over Canyon Hills to even their record at 3-3.
“I thought it was nice to put over 30 points on the board,” RBV quarterback Van Piercy told The Coast News after the win. “And we were able to do that because of all the big-time fourth-down stops our defense had.”
Piercy completed 14 of 25 passes for 209 yards, three touchdowns and an interception while adding 53 yards rushing. Ean Perfect rushed for 65 yards and a touchdown, while Drake Durazo added 36 yards and a score.
Piercy’s top targets helped turn that production into points. Isaiah Simmons caught five passes for 91 yards and a touchdown, Sean Richards had four catches for 43 yards and a score, and Mason Imoto added two catches for 26 yards and a touchdown.
“Both Sean and Isaiah are seniors, so we started the connection last year and it is continuing to be deadly for defenses this season,” Piercy said. “Mason Imoto is another receiver who is proving to be a target I can trust, especially with that TD catch right before half.”
The Longhorns host Mira Mesa on Friday night.
Eagles stay unbeaten with another blowout win
Another week, another Santa Fe Christian blowout.
The wins are becoming almost predictable — quarterback Dax Labrum is surgical, receiver Chase Woolley goes for about 100 yards and a couple of touchdowns, and the defense smothers.
The Eagles are now 6-0 and have outscored opponents 299-34 after Friday night’s 52-7 win over Coastal Academy on the road in Oceanside.
“The whole offense is rolling right now,” Labrum told The Coast News after the win.
Against the Stingrays, Labrum completed 15 of 18 passes for 241 yards and four touchdowns. Woolley caught eight passes for 111 yards and three touchdowns.
“When it comes to rankings as a team we all try to block out the noise. With that being said we know we have a shot against anyone in the county and are looking forward to proving that in playoffs,” Labrum said.
Labrum also credited the offensive line for the Eagles’ early-season success.
“Big shout out to the o-line; they are working hard and getting better every week. They are a huge part of our success,” Labrum said.
After three weeks on the road, the Eagles return home to Solana Beach on Friday to host King/Drew of Los Angeles.
