Is Santa Fe Christian senior Chase Woolley the best wide receiver in the county? His head coach and quarterback certainly think so.
“Chase Woolley’s the best receiver in the county, and I know people would argue with that, but he played limited time last year,” SFC head coach Jon Wallace told The Coast News before the start of the season. “If you go watch the tape, he doesn’t lose a rep. I think he’s unbelievable.”
“Chase is the best receiver in the county, and whatever college gets him hit the jackpot,” Eagles senior quarterback Dax Labrum told The Coast News following the Eagles’ most recent win. “It’s a blessing to have him on my team.”
Woolley brought his county-leading 426 receiving yards into Thursday night’s showdown against Isidore Newman School in New Orleans, then tacked on 159 more yards on eight catches, including a touchdown. His longest reception covered 71 yards in a 41-7 victory that moved the reigning CIF Division II San Diego Section champion to 4-0, with the Eagles outscoring opponents 191-27.
“I’m beyond impressed with our team,” Woolley said. “If you look at our starting lineup on offense and defense, it’s a lot of seniors who have been in school together since sixth grade, and I think we are one of, if not the most, tight-knit teams in the county. We really just play for each other.”
Labrum threw five touchdown passes in the victory, finding four different receivers for scores. Woolley caught one touchdown, while Cruz Campbell had three catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns, Jake Squires added three catches for 54 yards and two touchdowns, and Baylen Brees had four catches for 27 yards and a touchdown.
“Looking forward to keeping our foot on the gas,” Labrum said. “We don’t play down to the level of who we are playing. We always play our brand of ball no matter who it’s against.”
Brees also threw a touchdown pass to Squires on a trick play, a fitting moment with his father, Drew, serving as SFC’s passing game coordinator on the sideline.
Dad Drew Brees, of course, threw 308 touchdown passes at home in New Orleans during his 15 seasons as the Saints’ quarterback.
“It was unreal,” Brees said postgame to VSN. “Just looking up at the sky, knowing I grew up here — this is my home. I feel like it’s amazing coming back here. Watching my dad here and now he gets to coach me, I feel like it’s the greatest gift I could ever have.”
Next up for the Eagles is a Sept. 18 road game at Army-Navy. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
