Free low-water gardening taught

ENCINITAS—The San Dieguito Water District, along with the Santa Fe Irrigation District, Olivenhain Municipal Water District and Carlsbad Municipal Water District, is holding a free workshop from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 16 at the Encinitas Community Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Drive. Don Schultz, horticulture instructor at Cuyamaca College and former horticultural director of the Water Conservation Garden, will teach ways to reduce maintenance time, use less water and keep a beautiful outdoor living area. The goal of this free workshop is to educate customers and residents on designing and maintaining water-smart landscapes, as well as upgrading existing landscapes and irrigation systems. The workshop will cover residential landscape design, ornamental plant identification, home sprinkler systems and maintenance and fertilizing.
The agencies have partnered over a number of years to provide quality education in hands-on, applicable water conservation to our customers and residents. Because landscape irrigation accounts for approximately 60 percent of our water use, this is a key place for residents to consider water use efficiency. One landscape at a time, we can reduce our dependency on imported water and fluctuating supply. Because 20 percent to 30 percent of California’s energy is estimated to be used for the transportation and treatment of water, being efficient with water use is also being energy wise.
The San Dieguito Water District supplies water to Old Encinitas, Cardiff and Leucadia within the city of Encinitas.
