SAN MARCOS — A Cal State San Marcos student reported to university officials that she was raped on Nov. 2 in campus housing, the fifth such incident reported on campus since the fall semester began.
Members of the campus community — students, faculty and staff — received a federally mandated “Timely Warning Crime Bulletin” from the university on the evening of Nov. 3.
A copy of the bulletin was shared with The Coast News.
The alert, required under the Jeanne Clery Campus Safety Act, signed into law in 1990, indicated that the student knew the alleged perpetrator. A spokesperson for the CSUSM Police Department said no police report had been filed as of Wednesday morning.
The university did not respond to a request for comment from The Coast News.
This is the fifth rape reported on campus this semester. A sixth student reported being fondled by a burglar in her dorm room. University officials confirmed reports of rapes on Sept. 5 and Sept. 18 at The Quad, Sept. 6 at University Village Apartments and Sept. 13 at Black Oak Hall.
The fondling incident reportedly occurred Sept. 21.
Following criticism from students and faculty over the university’s initial response to the reported rapes, CSUSM President Ellen J. Neufeldt released a video Sept. 23 announcing increased campus security and expanded sexual assault prevention efforts, including bystander intervention training.
An online student petition calling for additional security measures had gathered more than 2,144 signatures as of Nov. 4.
In a separate case, campus police arrested a 19-year-old man Oct. 27 in connection with an alleged rape that occurred the night of Jan. 31 into Feb. 1. Brandon Reylando Roldan pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Monday and is scheduled to return to court Nov. 10 for a readiness conference.
Roldan was released on $100,000 bond and faces three charges stemming from allegations that he engaged in sexual acts with a female student while she was unconscious.
University police said Roldan was not enrolled as a student at the time of the alleged assault or his arrest.
University police logs indicate that, in addition to the Jan. 31-Feb. 1 incident involving Roldan, two other on-campus rapes were reported Feb. 27 and March 7. A sexual battery was also reported on March 1.
