ESCONDIDO — The Escondido Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint from 5 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location.
The department said it selects checkpoint locations based on data about crashes involving impaired drivers.
“Drivers under the influence of alcohol, illegal substances, or prescription medications put everyone on the road at risk,” Police Chief Ken Plunkett said. “Taking proactive steps to prevent impaired driving can help reduce these dangerous behaviors and make our roadways safe for everyone.”
Police said prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs and marijuana can also impair driving. Driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal, although its medicinal and recreational use is legal.
According to the department, drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.
The checkpoint is funded by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
