Driver in Carlsbad crash identified

CARLSBAD — The County Medical Examiner released Friday the name of a motorist killed in a violent crash Thursday as being Brittany Pursell, 24, of Carlsbad.
Pursell was the sole occupant of a 2007 Volkswagen Jetta that was traveling southbound on El Camino Real when she entered the bike lane to pass traffic at the intersection of El Camino Real and Levante Street, losing control of the vehicle and striking a traffic light pole, according to Lt. Kelly Cain.

Pursell was thrown from the vehicle, receiving massive injuries. She was not wearing her seatbelt. An air ambulance responded to the scene 12 minutes after the call. Medics worked on her for 20-minutes before transporting her via air ambulance to Scripps La Jolla where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
