CARLSBAD — The city’s chief of police announced his resignation July 30 after nearly six years with the Carlsbad Police Department.
Thomas Zoll joined the department in October 2003, after a nationwide search of more than 65 potential candidates. Before working for Carlsbad, Zoll served as assistant sheriff as well as commander for the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department Law Enforcement Services Bureau, serving nine cities in the county. His law enforcement career began in 1972, but last February, Zoll was placed on administrative leave under circumstances about which City Manager Lisa Hildabrand said she would not comment on at the time. After spending time off in March and April, he then returned to work.
Colleagues had nothing but praise for Zoll, and Zoll himself said his decision to retire has nothing to do with the incident. However, in an e-mail to members of the police department, Zoll confirmed the particularly stressful year, with the recent deaths in the family of his father and mother-in-law, as well as departmental troubles, were contributing factors in his decision.
