Camp Pendleton issues noise advisory for region

CAMP PENDLETON — The North County region can expect to hear explosions and other loud sounds from Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton over the next week.

Beginning at midnight tonight, July 11, and continuing through 11:59 p.m., July 20, live-fire training with high explosive munitions will be conducted on base.

According to Camp Pendleton’s website, the sound of the explosions may be amplified and heard up to 50 miles away depending on atmospheric conditions.

Fallbrook and Oceanside are the closest San Diego County communities while San Clemente is the closest Orange County city to base.

Noise from the training may be heard anytime through the day or night, according to base officials.

According to the base’s Range Compatible Use Zone Study, there are three noise zones that determine how loud sounds may be for nearby communities.

Noise Zone 1 is the lowest and does not pose any hazard but could disturb some residents during more intensive operations. Only minor restrictions are associated with this zone level.

Noise Zone 2 is the area where noise can begin to affect speech, sleep or the ability to hear television or radio. Certain commercial and industrial activities are compatible with the sound attenuation measures, according to the study. Residential development is not recommended in this zone level.

Noise Zone 3 has the highest noise intensity. Human-occupied facilities or sustained periods of human activity are not recommended here.
