DEL MAR — Gov. Jerry Brown reappointed Adam Day to the board of directors for the 22nd District Agricultural Association, which governs the Del Mar Fairgrounds Oct. 2.
Day, a Republican, was first appointed in 2008 by then-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. He has served as president since mid-2011, replacing Barry Nussbaum after he was not reappointed by Brown, a Democrat.
Day, whose term expired in January, said he submitted an application and went through the interview process.
“I’m honored to have been chosen by the governor,” he said. “He had many applicants. I look forward to continuing to ensure the Del Mar Fairgrounds provides first-class entertainment.”
Day, 43, is assistant tribal manager for the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. He previously served as campaign manager, senior policy advisor and chief of staff for San Diego County Supervisor Dianne Jacob and deputy chief of staff for Supervisor Greg Cox.
He is currently vice chairman of the San Diego County Planning Commission and a board member of the Downtown San Diego Partnership, Pacific Life Holiday Bowl and East County YMCA.
Brown also appointed Stephen Shewmaker, 62, to the board. Shewmaker, a Democrat, is president of Cubic Transportation Systems. He is currently a member of the American Public Transportation Association.
There is still one vacancy on the nine-member fair board, and the four-year terms of current directors Russ Penniman and Ruben Barrales expired in January 2010 and January 2012, respectively.
Penniman was appointed by Gov. Gray Davis in 2003 and reappointed by Schwarzenegger, who named Barrales to the board in 2008.
Board members receive no pay, but the benefits include free parking and admission to fairgrounds events.
