A native of Dayton, Ohio, Jim graduated from San Diego State and quickly got his first journalism job covering the County Board of Supervisors for County News Service. He later was on staff as reporter or editor for the Chula Vista Star-News, North County Blade-Citizen, North County Times, and San Diego Union-Tribune. In addition, he was a stringer for the San Diego Evening Tribune, ComputorEdge Magazine, Riverside Press-Enterprise, and San Diego Business Journal. He currently contributes to Living Blues magazine and AllAboutJazz, and is working on a history of jazz in San Diego County.
