Vista pursues raised medians along E. Vista Way to increase safety

VISTA — The city of Vista will review designs for raised medians along an approximately one-mile stretch of East Vista Way to improve traffic flow and increase safety.

On Tuesday, the City Council approved a $349,946 design contract with Michael Baker International to design concrete and landscaped medians running from Williamston Street to Taylor Street. Staff recommended moving forward with Michael Baker after receiving proposals from five total firms.

The project would add the raised medians along the current center lanes of the five-lane road, with each median measuring around 12 feet. Staff said the project will restrict left turn movements and reduce traffic collisions.

“This specific stretch of E. Vista Way has many commercial driveways and minor side streets.  As a result of frequent driveway access, large traffic volumes, and heavy left turn movements, there have been a high number of injury collisions,” a staff report states.

The council approved the contract as part of the consent agenda and did not discuss the item.

A federal Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP) grant is funding the project.

The project will act as an extension of the existing medians installed along this same corridor. Raised medians have already been installed along East Vista Way from around Fire Station 6 to Williamston Street.

Designs for the project will be brought back for approval at a future meeting.
