OCEANSIDE — A hazardous materials investigation in Oceanside prompted a SigAlert and a shelter-in-place order on Sunday for residents of a neighborhood where several suspicious packages were found.
At approximately 10:15 a.m. on Sept. 13, emergency personnel responded to a report of suspicious packages near Castellano Way and Vandegrift Drive, where they located multiple suspicious packages requiring further investigation, according to Oceanside Fire Department personnel.
“A unified command has been established with the Oceanside Fire Department and Oceanside Police Department, with assistance from San Diego County Environmental Health, San Diego Fire-Rescue Hazmat, Camp Pendleton Hazmat and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office Bomb/Arson Unit,” said Oceanside Battalion Chief Michael Farnham.
“A safety perimeter has been established around the suspicious packages,” Farnham added. “Specialized personnel are working to identify and safely dispose of the materials.”
The OPD issued a SigAlert, closing Vandegrift Boulevard to traffic in the affected area for several hours.
Shelter-in-place orders were issued for specific residents in the 700 block of Arthur Avenue and the 4900 block of El Mirlo Drive.
