Susi reaches 500, Sockers undefeated on season

DEL MAR — The San Diego Sockers remain undefeated after back-to-back to wins 10-8 against the Turlock Express at the Del Mar Arena Saturday and 9-3 against the Arizona Storm in Phoenix Sunday.

The home crowds of 1,604 saw team captain Aaron Susi reach a career milestone of scoring 500 points.
“We got the win, that’s all that matters,” Susi said. “As far as 500 points, playing 15 years, it’s definitely something that makes me feel good…you get to have something like that for the rest of your life. I’m just glad. The guys were trying to get me the ball as much as they could, so it was cool.”

Susi never thought about scoring 500 points when he first started his career, he said. It was just about trying to play year after year.

With another win and Susi’s career milestone, he’s not thinking about the team’s undefeated record, only about getting to the playoffs. “We just go out here and try to win games and win championships. It doesn’t matter if we’re undefeated or not, it all comes down to how we do in the playoffs,” Susi said.

“We’ve got a very close team, a lot of really good players; a lot of guys that can score. I think we do a good job at mixing the ball up and setting up different players on the team, keeping everybody happy.”

Defender Antonio Sutton joined the team last week in a move made by general manager John Kentera, who said Sutton’s veteran experience brings extra depth to the bench and helps to fill in with all the injuries.

Sutton fit in with ease, playing several minutes in his debut with the team Saturday.

“I think it’s easy to fit in with this team because the team plays really good soccer,” Sutton said. “One thing about these guys is they all work for one another. Even me, as a new player, they all supported me and were all positive on the bench and in the locker room.”

Kraig Chiles scored 4 goals Saturday and 2 Sunday against the Arizona Storm  bringing his league-leading goals scored to 35.

The Sockers next home game is Jan. 28 against the Tijuana Revolucion.
