Support CCA Red Cross Club’s first ever blood drive

DEL MAR — Students from Canyon Crest Academy’s Red Cross Club will host a community blood drive later this month and are encouraging residents to participate.

The drive is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on April 27 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Del Mar.

The student-led club, which has about 50 members, has volunteered throughout the region this spring and is organizing its first blood drive to support patients in need. Club members have already collected more than 400 toiletry donations in partnership with Torrey Pines Red Cross, raised more than $450 for national Red Cross efforts, and created hundreds of handmade cards for local veterans.

Organizers said the drive aims to help ensure a steady blood supply for trauma victims, surgery patients and people battling cancer or sickle cell disease.

According to the American Red Cross, someone in the United States needs blood every two seconds. A single donation can help save up to three lives, and about 40 donors are needed to collect a substantial supply.

How to Participate:

  • Register online at https://www.redcrossblood.org/give.html/drive-results?zipSponsor=stpetersdelmar to donate
  • Complete a RapidPass® online health history questionnaire to save time at check-in
  • Bring a blood donor card, driver’s license, or two other forms of ID
  • In most states, individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent, where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds, and are generally in good health may be eligible to donate blood.
  • High school students and other donors 18 years of age or younger must also meet certain height and weight requirements.

Participants will receive a $15 electronic gift card and refreshments, including a spring-themed treat.

Club members said they hope the event will inspire the community to give back and help save lives.

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church is located at 334 14th Street in Del Mar.
