Singing, my secret desire

Years ago, I stopped singing. I’ve always wanted to sing, but my family and friends told me I didn’t sound good. Since then, I’ve been mouthing the words in church. I even faked singing “Happy Birthday” while everyone else sang.

I read about “Paul’s Fabulous 3-step vocal method” and reached out. That was four months ago. Now I sing in church every Sunday and happily join in for “Happy Birthday” every chance I get. I sang to my husband for the first time. Here are three things I learned:

STEP ONE: Inner blocks can be removed

My biggest fear was that I might not have it in me. I realized I was OK with not having a singing voice, if that was the case. But I was not OK living with a block inside me. Paul gently and easily helped me melt away my inner blocks. As my voice flowed out of me, I was relieved. I felt released.

STEP TWO: Start with what is already working

Paul helped me by first listening to my speaking voice. He told me all the things he liked about it, which really gave me a boost.

He showed me how to use the best parts of my speaking voice and translate those to my singing. As I began to relax more and more, I heard my voice for the first time. I liked how I sounded.

STEP THREE: Open the heart

My secret desire was to sing and make people feel good. Paul helped me to connect my heart with my singing; my voice now comes from a deeper place. This gives me confidence. I look forward to singing a Marvin Gaye song at our next family gathering and, later, a duet with my husband.

My husband says he feels how much I love him when I sing. My singing is about helping people feel good. My singing isn’t a secret anymore. — Heather in Encinitas
