SAN MARCOS — Residents of Silvergate San Marcos stepped back in time last week for a lively 1950s-themed Sock Hop that brought dancing, laughter, and retro flair to the senior living community.
Hosted June 6 in the community’s Central Courtyard, the event featured vintage rock ‘n’ roll, colorful poodle skirts, and diner-inspired eats as part of Silvergate’s ongoing effort to keep seniors socially engaged and connected.
“Our goal isn’t just to host fun events — it’s to create moments of connection and joy that enhance the overall well-being of our residents,” said Joan Rink-Carroll, executive director at Silvergate San Marcos. “We know that social engagement has a tremendous impact on health, both physically and emotionally. Events like this Sock Hop allow our residents to build friendships, relive cherished memories, and most importantly, continue feeling young at heart.”
Residents and staff dressed for the occasion — cat-eye glasses, leather jackets, and slicked-back hair — as guests filled the courtyard for a celebration that included a twist contest, photo booths, and music from the era. The dance floor remained busy throughout the afternoon, with guests moving to hits like Chubby Checker’s “The Twist.”
Themed food options such as root beer floats, cheeseburgers, fries, and pickles added to the nostalgic atmosphere, which was designed to evoke the look and feel of a classic American diner.
Behind the festivities was a deeper purpose, organizers said: promoting senior health and happiness through social connection. Research shows that community engagement can reduce the risk of depression, cognitive decline, and other age-related health concerns.
Silvergate’s activity calendar is built around that concept, offering year-round programming aimed at improving the quality of life for its residents.
For longtime resident Beverly Stolle, the event was a chance to relive cherished memories.
“I loved that era for its incredibly fun music and the innocence of the time. When I heard we were having a Sock Hop, I couldn’t wait to break out the old poodle skirt that my mother made for me years ago,” she said. “I was eager to attend to watch the dancing and immerse myself in the music. Thank you to Silvergate for continually hosting fun and meaningful events for the residents here.”

Prospective residents also attended, using the opportunity to get a feel for the community. Among them was June Peever, a resident of San Marcos.
“The events here are always so much fun, and they’re always done so nicely. Everybody has a good time, and it’s gotten to the point that I know so many people here that it’s just fun to be here,” Peever said. “I’m looking at Silvergate because it’s such a quality retirement community. You can tell the team here puts a lot of love and care into everything they do.”
Silvergate San Marcos is known for its vibrant atmosphere, remodeled apartment homes, and a longtime staff that emphasizes personalized care. The community’s award-winning Activities team organizes themed parties, wellness classes, lectures and off-site excursions.
“We believe retirement should be fun,” said David Nelson, the community’s marketing director. “That’s why our team works so hard to build an event schedule that keeps our residents active and makes every day matter. It’s about honoring their interests and giving them opportunities to stay curious, connected, and socially fulfilled.”
