SAN MARCOS — Silvergate San Marcos, a senior living community, was abuzz with excitement last week as residents and guests gathered on Aug. 8 for a special “Meet The Author” event with a well-known author and radio host.
The event featured San Diego Union-Tribune columnist and former KPBS Radio Show host Richard Lederer. Known for his razor-sharp wit and deep insights into the English language, Lederer shared stories from his book, “The Gift of Age,” captivating the audience with his unique brand of humor and wisdom.
An Afternoon of Wit, Wisdom, and Wordplay
Lederer, whose career includes authoring more than 60 books on language, history, and humor, took the stage to a warm welcome from the Silvergate San Marcos community. His presentation, a journey through the playful and poignant elements of aging, explored excerpts from his recent work, “The Gift of Age.”
Residents and guests alike were treated to Lederer’s puns and truths on aging, punctuated by the clever wordplay and historical anecdotes that have made him a beloved figure in the literary world.

“Dr. Lederer’s humor was infectious, and his insights into the aging process were both thought-provoking and heartwarming,” said Alicia Delzalle, who currently resides in San Marcos and has attended many other Silvergate activities. “It was wonderful to hear him speak about the joys and challenges of growing older in such a lighthearted and uplifting way.”
Lederer’s works include bestsellers like “Anguished English,” a collection of humorous language bloopers,” “American Trivia,” “Amazing Words,” “Hilarious Humor,” and “The Big Book of Wordplay Crosswords.”
His books explore everything from the quirks of the English language to the origins of word puns, pets, and American history. During the event, Lederer wove together examples from his various books, creating a tapestry of humor and knowledge that seemed to resonate with the audience.
A Community Engaged
The event was part of Silvergate San Marcos’ commitment to providing its residents with engaging and enriching activities. Joan Rink-Carroll, executive director of Silvergate San Marcos, emphasized the importance of such events in fostering a vibrant and healthy community.
“At Silvergate, we believe that staying active and engaged is key to maintaining health and happiness as we age. Events like today’s with Dr. Lederer are a perfect example of how we create opportunities for our residents to connect, learn, and enjoy life to the fullest,” said Rink-Carroll.

Silvergate San Marcos is known for its social calendar, which includes everything from creative art workshops and lively social gatherings to stimulating discussions about literature and current events.
The community’s array of activities is designed to enhance the well-being of its residents by keeping them mentally, physically, and socially active. “This was such an amazing talk,” said Sally Stemper, a prospective resident of the Silvergate San Marcos community. “I read all of Dr. Lederer’s articles, and I’m so thrilled I came here today. He was wonderful. I just love the programs Silvergate puts on.”
The event concluded with a book signing, where residents and guests had the opportunity to meet Dr. Lederer personally. Many lined up to have their copies of “The Gift of Age” and other Lederer titles autographed, eager to take home a memento of the experience.
The afternoon wrapped up with light refreshments and a lively discussion among attendees, who shared their thoughts on the presentation and their favorite Lederer books.
