Reimagining wellness at the Inn at Moonlight Beach

In 2017, Shangwen Chiu Kennedy and her partners purchased the Inn at Moonlight Beach, embarking on a major renovation to transform the property into a wellness-focused, state-of-the-art destination. A Harvard-trained architect and urban designer with 20 years of experience in global city planning, Kennedy became a WELL Accredited Professional in 2016, after learning about the WELL Building Standard, which supports human health and wellness.

The Inn stands out as the world’s first WELL-certified hotel. “On-site, you’ll find an urban biodynamic farm and small garden areas where guests can harvest their own salad, explore a Makers Station to create a garden to take home, and visit an herb station to prepare medicinal bath blends. We also offer a farm-to-table food board and a Creativity Lab for activities like painting heart rocks, mandala coloring, and flower pressing,” she explains.

“We utilize solar energy, install Tesla charging stations, and incorporate permeable paving and water-saving fixtures. We upcycle materials, compost food waste, and have eliminated plastic water bottles.”

The Inn also features healing services such as massage, reiki, chakra healing, foot soaks, private yoga sessions, and sound healing classes.

Just a 10-minute walk from Moonlight Beach, the Inn’s offerings are deeply rooted in the local, authentic spirit of Encinitas, providing a unique, personalized experience that contrasts with the typical chain hotel.

“Popular Amenities include afternoon Tea & Snacks, flower & herb baths, wellness packages and massages in our healing room. We’ve been voted one of the best staycations in San Diego because we offer a unique blend of wellness, creativity and relaxation, all just a short walk from the beach and downtown Encinitas. Whether you’re seeking tranquility, outdoor adventure, or hands-on creativity, the Inn provides a restorative escape that feels worlds away from the everyday!”

“Being a part of the Encinitas Chamber of Commerce has helped us connect with the local community and spread the word about our unique offerings. It’s been a great way to share our story and highlight the Inn as a destination that emphasizes wellness, creativity, and community.”

Perfect day in Encinitas?

“A morning hike at one of our beautiful local trails, then heading to the beach with my husband and the kids. We’d grab lunch at a local café, then meet up with friends for an afternoon at the Inn’s gardens, ending the day with a family dinner watching the sunset from Moonlight Beach.”
