Police search for gun suspect

OCEANSIDE – Police are searching for a suspect identified as Rodney Petty, accused of shooting an elderly woman in the leg and pistol-whipping another resident in their Oceanside residence.
Petty, 48, is considered armed and dangerous, according to Acting Captain Leonard Mata, of the Oceanside Police Department.
Petty allegedly went to a residence at the 300 block of Boomvang Court on Aug. 16, and assaulted a 40-year-old acquaintance, beating him on the head with a handgun during an argument about money, according to Mata.
A 74-year-old female resident, who was not involved in the argument, went to the garage to avoid the confrontation.
Police said that Petty left the house after he assaulted the male victim, and as he walked past the garage he shot the elderly woman in her lower leg before fleeing in a truck.
Authorities said it was unclear if the weapon was discharged intentionally or not.
The victims were both transported by air to Scripps Mercy Hospital and both later released.
Police recovered the truck Petty was driving on the day of the assault. He remains at large, and is now believed to be driving a 1988 maroon Cadillac with the California license plate 2LPH938.
Authorities are asking anyone with information to his whereabouts to call the Oceanside Police dispatch at (760) 435-4900, or Detective Marilyn Johnson at (760) 435-4732.
