ENCINITAS — Approximately 2,500 runners, joggers and walkers filled Coast Highway 101 on Sunday morning for this year’s Kook Run, kicking off Super Bowl Sunday with a high-energy mix of fun, competition and new course records.

Runners participated in 5K and 10K races, with the route passing by coastal landmarks like the Cardiff Kook statue and offering scenic ocean views. Many participants embraced the event’s playful spirit, wearing elaborate costumes while competing for prizes in categories like “Best Group Theme” and “Best ‘Kook’ Theme.”

Futsum Zenasalasie of Flagstaff, Arizona, finished in 28 minutes and 30 seconds to win the men’s pro 10K race. Lauren Hagans, also of Flagstaff, won the women’s 10K pro race at 32:10, the fastest road finish in 2025.

Encinitas resident Blake Dunkleberger finished 25th in the men’s 10K with 33:10.

For the 5K, Dean McLane of San Diego finished with a time of 15:29 for the men. On the women’s side, L. Esquivel finished first at 18:55. Cardiff runner Lindsay Buck took second place in the 5K at 19:10.

The event began around 7 a.m. beneath the iconic Encinitas sign and culminated with a lively post-run Finish Line Festival featuring live music, breakfast tacos and a vendor village. Proceeds from the race benefit local organizations, including Cardiff 101 Mainstreet, Ecke YMCA, Right Hand Angels and Boy Scouts Troop 776.
