ENCINITAS — The Encinitas Fire Department will celebrate National Fire Prevention Week on Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. with an open house at Fire Station No. 5. This year’s theme: averting kitchen fires.
According to recent National Fire Protection Association research, unsafe cooking is the leading cause of home fires. Additionally, fires from cooking rank first in terms of home fire-related injuries.
“Two out of every five home fires start in the kitchen,” Senior Deputy Fire Marshall Anita Pupping said. “If you have to leave the room, turn off what you’re frying, grilling or broiling. Turn off the stove.”
“Stand by your pan, and keep an eye on what you fry — that’s what we’re reminding people to do this year,” Pupping added.
Firefighters will demonstrate how to cook safely during the event. They’ll also educate residents about wildfire prevention, the importance of checking smoke detectors and proper pool safety.
“The theme is kitchen fires, but we’ll provide a gamut of information for kids and their parents,” Pupping said.
Plus, those in attendance can tour the fire station, see fire engines and meet firefighters.
Other tips to prevent kitchen fires: clean up food as well grease from burners and stovetops, wear shirts with tight-fitting sleeves when cooking and keep anything that can burn away from stovetops.
Fire Station No. 5 is located at 540 Balour Drive.
