Suspect charged in fatal 2024 shooting in Vista
VISTA — A suspect in a shooting that killed one youth and left three others wounded in Vista last summer has been charged in the case, authorities reported today.
Prosecutors on Tuesday filed murder and attempted murder counts against Jose Ulices Luna, 20, in connection with the gunfire death of 19-year-old Antonio Calderon Mendiola and the wounding of another young man and two teenage boys, according to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office.
On July 20, the four victims arrived at Palomar Medical Center, suffering from gunshot wounds, Lt. Michael Krugh said. Mendiola died there that morning.
Two of the others, ages 17 and 18, were hospitalized in critical condition, and the fourth, a 16-year-old, was admitted in stable condition. They have since been released from medical care, Krugh said.
Officials have not disclosed what led investigators to identify Luna — who has been jailed on unrelated charges since August — as a suspect in the case.
The motive for the shooting, which took place in the 800 block of Newport Terrace, south of Bobier Drive and east of North Santa Fe Avenue, remains undetermined, the lieutenant said.
