OCEANSIDE — City Manager Jonathan Borrego will step down Dec. 18 as he pursues an opportunity to become Anaheim’s city manager, it was announced today.
Borrego was recently named the finalist for Anaheim’s city manager position. The Anaheim City Council will consider a proposed employment agreement next week.
“Oceanside is a proud community with deep history, and its community members are very much engaged in civic affairs. Residents here show up, speak up and have high expectations of the city’s elected and appointed leaders,” Borrego said in a statement. “I’m proud to say that the city’s leadership lives up to these expectations, and recent resident polls suggest that the overwhelming majority of residents are either satisfied or very satisfied with the level of service they receive. Such opinions are a reflection of the hard work and dedication that staff and our city council provide every day.
“Leaving is a hard decision, and I’ll be forever grateful that I was afforded the opportunity to support the city and its residents during such a dynamic time in Oceanside’s history.”
Borrego began working for the city in 2017 as development services director before being promoted to deputy city manager in 2019. The council unanimously appointed him city manager in August 2022.
“Under his leadership, Oceanside opened and expanded its first homeless shelter, preserved the historic Americanization School for use by the Crown Heights neighborhood as a community center, launched the innovative RE:BEACH project, completed the Fire Station 1 reconstruction, and advanced designs for a new park at El Corazon,” Mayor Esther Sanchez said in a statement. “He leaves the city with a strong leadership team, and residents can expect services to continue without interruption. The city council is grateful for his service.”
The Oceanside City Council is expected to appoint an interim city manager at a future closed-session meeting, then conduct a national search for a permanent replacement.
