VISTA — A summer evening at the Moonlight Amphitheatre has a way of making the show feel like only part of the experience.
Set inside Brengle Terrace Park, the open-air venue gives North County theatergoers a chance to arrive early, bring dinner, settle in as the sun goes down and watch Broadway-style musical theater under the stars. Outside food and nonalcoholic drinks are welcome, food and beverages are available for purchase, and parking is free.
That setting is part of what has made Moonlight a North County favorite for generations. In The Coast News’ 2026 Best of North County voting, Moonlight Amphitheatre earned honors for both Best Live Theatre and Best Live Music Venue.
This month, the stage belongs to “Guys and Dolls,” the classic musical comedy running through Aug. 29 as part of Moonlight Stage Productions’ 45th season.
With music and lyrics by Frank Loesser and a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, “Guys and Dolls” drops audiences into the colorful world of 1950s New York, where gamblers, showgirls, missionaries and hopeless romantics cross paths in a story built around love, luck and one very risky wager.
The score includes Broadway favorites such as “Luck Be a Lady,” “A Bushel and a Peck” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat.”
Adding to the chemistry onstage, the four romantic leads are played by two married couples in real life. Patrick Cummings and Alessa Neeck portray Sky Masterson and Sarah Brown, while Steven Glaudini and Bets Malone play Nathan Detroit and Miss Adelaide.
But “Guys and Dolls” is also a good excuse for anyone who has never been to Moonlight to discover one of North County’s most distinctive summer traditions.
The amphitheater pairs professional production values, a live orchestra and large-scale musical theater with the relaxed feel of an outdoor evening. Beyond the reserved seating are lawn sections where guests can settle in with a picnic, while the surrounding park, evening sky and rising moon become part of the backdrop.
It is part theater, part summer night out, and that combination is a big part of Moonlight’s appeal.
The venue also has more on the calendar after the Broadway season winds down.
On Oct. 3, “Dream Like Taylor” brings a live-band celebration of Taylor Swift’s music to the amphitheater, spanning the different eras of her career and offering fans a chance to hear familiar favorites in Moonlight’s outdoor setting.
Then, on Oct. 24, illusionist Reza brings “Edge of Illusion” to the stage, combining large-scale illusions, comedy and audience interaction.
Those shows give North County audiences a couple more chances to enjoy the amphitheater before the year winds down, and they also show the range of programming Moonlight has built beyond traditional musical theater.
For now, though, there are only a handful of summer nights left to catch “Guys and Dolls” beneath the stars.
Performances continue through Aug. 29 at Moonlight Amphitheatre, 1250 Vale Terrace Drive in Vista. Tickets for “Guys and Dolls,” “Dream Like Taylor,” Reza and other upcoming Moonlight events are available through the VisTix box office at 760-724-2110 or at moonlightstage.com.
