If ever there was an election-time hit piece, Bob Ayers’ recent letter to the editor on mayoral candidate Bruce Ehlers is it. Ayers was apparently either put up to write it as a dirty politics move or has a truly profound ignorance of local and state law and a real disdain for the voters.
Ehlers’ commitment to upholding our code, which governs everything from traffic to housing, has been a thorn in many a developer’s side. When Ayers writes that Ehlers is “not suited to represent all Encinitans,” he means “not suited to represent the building industry.” If enforcing our code comes at the “expense” of unscrupulous developers, so be it. Most of us are good with that.
True, as the author and champion of our Prop A Right to Vote on zoning, Bruce mentions it often, as he should. Prop A is the only thing that stands between residents and, even worse, rampant overdevelopment. Many residents are new here and do need to know about it.
Prop A was not about protecting his own house or neighborhood. From the start, Ehlers recognized that we all used the whole city, and all of Encinitas needed protection.
Facts matter. Let’s examine them. Ayers wrote melodramatically that Prop A “snapped” in 2017 when, in fact, it was the voters who had simply exercised their right to vote to say no to the city’s overblown housing plan. What instead “snapped” was a council in disbelief that the voters had not been taken in by their efforts to secure a Yes vote.
To say that Prop A “clashed with state law” is wrong. It was the council that clashed with residents who knew a bad plan when they saw one.
Ayers has bad intel, as lawsuits did not “come flying” at Encinitas. There was a single joint filing from the Building Industry Association and a tenants’ rights group. After promising to defend Prop A, then-Mayor Catherine Blakespear flipped on residents, and the judge set aside Prop A only for that year’s housing plan.
Not satisfied with a one-time set-aside, the following year, Blakespear sued her own residents when she took Prop A to court to eliminate it for good.
She lost, and the state (California Department of Housing and Community Development) lost, with the judge citing permanent constitutional protections. Ehlers was a key part of the testimony… Perhaps Ayers would like to reveal how many “millions” Blakespear cost taxpayers with her actions. Residents were awarded costs and attorneys’ fees.
The current housing plan, with its “unpopular developments,” was hardly “rushed into place.” It was an 18-month-old plan that Blakespear and Kranz had supported all along; this existing plan was simply enforced, and we have Blakespear and Kranz to thank for that.
When Kranz publicly fired Ehlers, it was he — not Ehlers — who “snapped.” This was proven by a parade of planning commissioners, all testifying to Bruce’s integrity and knowledge. (Then-planning chair Kevin Doyle’s testimony may be viewed here.) All made it clear that Ehlers had done nothing wrong; his only mistake was in not “interpreting” code to accommodate developers.
If his firing was contentious, it was because it was wrong. When Kranz “implored” Ehlers to “change his ways,” it was proof of Ehlers’ integrity that he would not agree to bend code.
It’s odd that Ayers complains about Ehlers being “hyper-local.” Either you are for local control or you are for state control, and this is the big difference between Ehlers and Kranz. Kranz does not, in fact, “seek solutions that benefit all of Encinitas.” His mantra has become “my hands are tied,” which benefits the building industry only.
What is interesting about Ehlers’ supporters is that they come in all stripes. Isn’t that what we want in a true leader? Someone who finds common ground and does not serve special interests? The two district candidates Ehlers endorses, Luke Shaffer (District 1) and Jim O’Hara (District 2), do not get their “energy from grievances” — they are discussing and responding to very real concerns from citizens citywide.
Finally, let’s consider the source. Ayers identified himself as an attorney but omitted the fact that he is a real estate attorney. He and his clients benefit from the kind of code “interpretations” that Ehlers refused to bend to. It’s apparent that Ayers has a conflict of interest.
Equally conflicted is Tony Kranz, demonstrated by the kind of people he surrounds himself with and from whom he takes campaign donations. The inaccuracies and outright lies Ayers told are evidence enough. Ehlers is the obvious choice for mayor.

Ayers and his “snap” characterization falls completely flat because no one has ever seen Ehlers over the past 20 years be anything but even tempered. It is Kranz who routinely turns purple when he doesn’t disagree with a comment, who against council rules argues with public speakers, and who has a legendary anger management problem.
Funny that Ayers’ ego thinks it took a long time to get a response in the paper. Just more revelation about the guy.
It’s apparent by your snide comments Mr Ayers, that you also have no respect or regard for citizens. As a real estate attorney, I understand your need to protect your interests, but residents too are looking to protect their interests with new and most certainly improved leadership. Also, it’s not all about you, it’s about what’s best and better for Encinitas.
While you continue to convince yourself and others that Ehlers is a no good rascal many, especially Leucadia residents, are painfully aware of how Tony Kranz and Kellie Hinze took and continue to take aim at what once was a nice community and fill it with horrible and poorly planned density housing, with little forethought for parking, traffic or any other infrastructure to support it.
Tony is and always has been a lazy bureaucrat. He pats himself on the back for the debt he and his council put us in for Streetscape and Pacific View. He refuses to address the homeless problem we, the kooks as he calls us, see and experience daily through increased crime or one on one confrontations. There is a litany of items regular folks dislike about what’s happened to our communities, and those are just a couple.
Tony isn’t a leader, has no business skills or acumen and loses his temper if he doesn’t get his way. He takes the easy way out, whether it’s through appointments to council or letting others campaign for him. Bruce is going to spank his butt this election, because he’s worked for it and earned it.
I, for one, can’t wait!
Typical of the Bruce Ehlers’ clan to both spin crazy tales while demonizing our City’s truthtellers who are dedicated to increasing opportunities for all Encinitas residents and not just a privileged few. Bob Ayers has lived in Encinitas for 60 years moving here in the early 1960s when his father was recruited by Paul Ecke Jr to be our YMCA’s first Executive Director. Bob has been a soccer coach and done charitable work for our low income children and their families for decades. It is sinister that your clan chooses to throw shade on our community pillars who are willing to sacrifice their time and talent for the good of all our residents. You hold up Ehlers like he is a king who can do no wrong despite his violation of his oath of office as both an appointed and elected official, authoring the flawed Prop A that has ultimately resulted in higher density and great expense to our City. You can fool people in your inner circle but the good people of Encinitas can see reality and who to trust. I am voting for Mayor Tony Kranz, District 1 Council Member Allison Blackwell and District 2 Council Member Destiny Preston who will respect their oath of office, support inclusive and realistic policies dedicated to providing opportunities to all Encinitans.
Bruce Ehlers must be making great gains for Mr. Ayres to write such a derogatory hit piece. If donations are any indication, Bruce Ehlers’s fundraising for a first time mayoral candidate is impressive, nearly doubling his opponent, incumbent Kranz.
Prop A, voted in by the majority of residents, has only been contentious to council members and mayors who find it getting in the way of their cozy relationship with developers, and mayor Kranz is no exception.
If you’ve read about the housing task force, appointed by the council and led by Mayor Kranz and his appointed council member Blackwell, you would know that without a Prop A vote, Pacific View, the Self Realization Fellowship, Schools, College Campuses, Parks could never be turned into housing/density housing without our Prop A vote. For this alone this task force is a farce.
Kranz knows this, but then again Kranz was for Prop A, before he was against it. He was also Bruce Ehler’s friend before he fired him. Y tu, Tony?
It’s time that Tony, with his disregard for his constituent’s opinions or his city’s needs, be set aside to fade away into political obscurity.
It’s going to be a big job reining in spending, cleaning house in city hall and getting back to the city’s business of fiscal accountability. Bruce is the man to do it. Two more years of Tony Kranz and this city will be broken beyond repair, as well as broke.
Importantly, Bruce will not lead with an ideology. We’ve had enough of that over the last 6-8 years. Hopefully, Bruce can bring Encinitas back from its steady march towards mediocrity and seediness to a friendly, safe and well run beach town again.
From O’Hara’s recent newsletter: “I hope you take the time to read them, and then share your thoughts and input with me. Let me know if there are any issues or concerns that I don’t mention on these emails too. I want to represent the residents of our city the best I can, and the best way to do that is to listen to and hear from all of you.”
None of Ayers’ supposed “grievances,” but connection and sincere interest in what concerns all of us. Had Ayers bothered to talk with O’Hara he’d also hear some suggestions on how to make things better.
Contrast O’Hara reaching out in writing and in person and contrast that with Preston, who hides from the public and has protectors around her to cut off conversations that go beyond surface level. O’Hara did not need such watch dogs at the recent Chamber event because he’s actually informed and has nothing to fear from folks asking the hard questions.
Well it certainly took a very long time for the Ehler’s camp to find someone to put their name on this piece in response to my OP ED “Bruce Ehlers Should Not Be Our Mayor” (The Coast News, Sept 16). Frankly, I am a bit honored since I am not running for anything. But since Ms. Martin and her cadre of editors put so much time into repeatedly and inaccurately referring to my various “conflicts of interest”, I want to share a few more that may just make Ehlers snap yet again: 1) I go into the Mayor’s office every morning and sharpen the pencils for Tony Kranz; 2) Tony once needed a new kidney and I donated half of mine to him – and I performed the surgery too. George Soros donated his blood; 3) Catherine Blakespear is my sister!! (I can’t believe that has not been mentioned by anonymous folks here and on Next Door who remain absolutely obsessed with my little sis and our little “cabal”.); 4) I used to collect popsicle sticks at Moonlight Beach then I glued them together to make a little house then ran it over with my Stingray; 5) In addition to being a real estate lawyer (which I am not) I can also juggle four bean bags at a time (which I can’t). There are more than a few folks in this town that know me, my brothers, my wife, our sons, my mother, my father. We are not liars. Nobody speaks or writes for me. Bruce Ehlers should not be our Mayor. I wrote that editorial to tell voters why he should not and why Tony Kranz should be our Mayor. My OP ED contains the facts. Thanks again for the honor of your time, Ms. Martin, et.al. Bob Ayers
Encinitas needs a new team, Kranz and Blackwell, and all Blakespear remora’s need to be removed from office.
Save Encinitas:
Bruce Ehlers for Mayor
Luke Shaffer for D1
Jim O’Hara for D2
