Google me? Maybe not anymore

For most of my professional life, digital marketing came down to a simple instruction: Google me. Build the website, rank in search, get the click and hopefully win the customer. For more than two decades, that has been the basic architecture of online marketing. But what happens when clicks start to disappear?

That is the shift businesses need to understand now. Consumers are increasingly asking AI where to eat, what to buy, who to hire and where to go. Google itself is answering more questions directly, while platforms like ChatGPT can recommend a business before the customer ever visits its website. The old objective was traffic. The emerging objective is being part of the answer.

That means your business can no longer rely on what you say about yourself on your own website. Your expertise, reputation and story need to exist across the broader digital landscape through credible articles, reviews, Google profiles, social media, video, podcasts and other trusted websites.

Marketing thinker Mark Schaefer has long argued that as content increases, trust and human connection become more valuable. Artificial intelligence only accelerates that reality. Machines can generate an almost unlimited amount of information, but they cannot simply manufacture genuine reputation.

So perhaps the most important digital marketing question in 2026 is no longer, “How do I get more clicks?” It may be, “Why would the internet believe my business matters?”

A website can tell the world you are great. A reputation requires other people and credible sources to reinforce it. Businesses that understand this spend less time chasing every algorithm and more time building something far more durable: authority.

The click may be changing, but trust remains the currency.
