I tell San Diego clients this plainly: if Google is going to answer more questions on the results page, our job is to own those answer boxes — rich snippets today, AI Overviews tomorrow.
Google has expanded AI Overviews globally and is publishing guidance for site owners. That means your content can be summarized at the top of search results or cited within those summaries — whether you click or not.
Why does this matter? Zero-click behavior keeps rising. Independent studies in 2024–2025 show most searches end without a website click. In other words, the decision happens on the results page. We can’t wish that away, so we optimize for the surface where the decision is made.
My playbook focuses on two things: (1) making content easy for machines to understand and (2) structuring answers so they’re excerpt-ready.
- Mark up your pages. Use schema.org structured data that Google supports (e.g., Organization/LocalBusiness, Product, Review, Event, HowTo, etc.). This markup makes your page eligible for rich results — stars, price, and event dates — which are also read by AI systems.
- Aim for snippet-ready writing. Lead with the answer in one or two sentences, then add a clean list or short steps — exactly what overviews and snippets like to quote. Note that Google reduced visibility for some types (for example, it deprecated How-to rich results on desktop), so prioritize formats that still show.
- Clarify your “entity.” Keep your business name, address, phone, categories, and services consistent on your site and Google Business Profile. That helps Google connect your brand to queries such as “La Jolla kayak tour hours” and “Encinitas surf lessons for kids,” improving both map and answer box eligibility.
- Measure what matters. In Search Console, watch the Search appearance reports for rich results and compare impressions to clicks. Visibility in the box builds brand preference—even when the click doesn’t come.
Bottom line: in a 32-million-visitor city, people decide fast. Treat rich snippets and AI-readability as distribution, not decoration — and you’ll win the moment of decision on the results page.
